Which universities and courses use the TMUA?

Seven UK universities use the test, but the rule is set by the course. Compulsory, recommended and contextual-exception statuses do not mean the same thing.

For 2027 entry, the TMUA is used by Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, the London School of Economics, University College London, Warwick and Durham. That does not mean every course at those universities requires it.

Requirements can change. Confirm the live degree page before registering, and remember that a university may use TMUA for one course but not another.

Courses in the official April 2026 list

  • Cambridge — compulsory: Computer Science (G400), Economics (L100), and Mathematics (G100).
  • Oxford — compulsory: Computer Science (G400), Computer Science and Philosophy (IV15), Mathematics and Computer Science (GG14), Mathematics and Philosophy (GV15), and Mathematics or Mathematics and Statistics (G100).
  • Imperial — compulsory: the listed Computing degrees (G400, G401, G700, G402, G501, G610, G600 and GG47), Economics, Finance and Data Science (L1N3), and the listed Mathematics degrees (G103, G100, G125, GG14, GG41, G104, G1F3, G102, G1G3 and G1GH).
  • LSE: compulsory for Economics (L101) and Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (L140); recommended for the listed Actuarial Science, Data Science, Economics and Data Science, Financial Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematics, Statistics and Business, Mathematics with Data Science, Mathematics with Economics, and Mathematics and Economics programmes.
  • UCL — compulsory: Economics (L100) and Economics with Study Abroad (L101).
  • Warwick: compulsory, except for applicants eligible for a contextual offer, for the listed Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics and Mathematics degrees; recommended for the listed Data Science, Economics, Mathematics and Statistics, and MORSE degrees.
  • Durham — recommended: BSc Mathematics (G100), MMath Mathematics (G103), BSc Mathematics and Statistics (G111), and MMath Mathematics and Statistics (G114).

The official list is a starting point, not permission to skip the live degree page. Course titles, codes and admissions rules can change after a central list is published.

Which sitting should you take?

Applicants to the Oxford courses currently listed under TMUA and standard-deadline Cambridge applicants use the October 2026 sitting. A limited January exception applies to Cambridge mature applicants applying to a mature college with a January deadline. Although UAT-UK's general deadlines page also mentions an Oxford Foundation Year exception across its test portfolio, the official 2027 list does not show an Oxford Foundation Year course requiring TMUA. Applicants to the other five participating universities may choose October or January. UAT-UK states that neither sitting has an advantage, and candidates may sit TMUA only once in an admissions cycle. The dates and registration guide gives the full booking sequence.

What score do universities want?

Most universities do not publish a universal hard cutoff. A score may be combined with predicted grades, contextual information, interviews or the rest of the application. A precise number quoted without a university source should be treated as an estimate, not an admissions rule.

No score guarantees an offer. The TMUA has no official pass mark, and one score can be interpreted differently across courses and universities.
