Most Cambridge and Oxford applicants must sit in October. Applicants to the other TMUA universities can normally choose October or January, and UAT-UK says neither sitting has an admissions advantage.

October is required
Standard-deadline applicants to Cambridge or Oxford courses that require TMUA must use the October 2026 sitting. Book early and work backwards from 12–16 October.
The two sitting timelines
Booking opens 20 July at 3pm BST and closes 28 September at 6pm BST. Results are scheduled for 16 November 2026.
Booking opens 26 October at 3pm GMT and closes 21 December at 6pm GMT. Results are scheduled for 8 February 2027.
TMUA runs on 15–16 October 2026 and 8 January 2027 in these locations under the current security arrangements.

What actually changes between October and January?
You receive the result on 16 November, before the main January UCAS equal-consideration deadline. You also avoid carrying TMUA work into winter mocks and the later part of Year 13.
You can use the autumn term to strengthen content and technique. The cost is a result scheduled for 8 February, after the main UCAS application deadline and potentially near school mocks.
The papers are statistically equated onto the same reported scale. Sitting later should not create a scoring advantage merely because the cohort or form differs. The practical question is which window lets you produce your best controlled performance.
A sensible way to choose when both are allowed
Start with the exact course and university, not advice from another applicant.
Use a complete timed paper to identify the size of the actual gap.
Add school mocks, UCAS work, coursework and holidays to the same view.
Preferred centres and times are more likely to be available when booking begins.
October is usually sensible when
- your course requires it;
- your timed performance is already stable;
- January clashes with mocks or heavy coursework;
- you want your result before finalising non-Oxbridge choices where timing permits.
January can be sensible when
- your universities explicitly allow it;
- your diagnostic shows repairable content gaps rather than only exam nerves;
- your autumn schedule gives you enough structured practice time;
- October clashes with important school examinations and you are not bound to the Oxford or Cambridge sitting.
Retakes, reapplications and deferred entry
You cannot sit in October and then take TMUA again in January. The two windows form one admissions cycle and UAT-UK permits one attempt.
A previous TMUA score is not carried into a later application cycle. If the new application requires TMUA, the test must be taken again in that cycle.
Sit the test in the admissions cycle in which the UCAS application is submitted. The test is attached to that application cycle, not simply to the year in which the course begins.
Questions students repeatedly ask
UAT-UK states there is no advantage to either session for institutions where candidates can choose. LSE accepts both and strongly encourages the first sitting for wider slot and location availability, not because it publishes a scoring preference.
No. Candidates may sit the test only once within the same admissions cycle.
No assumption of identical forms should be made. Equating exists so different forms and sittings can be reported on one scale.
No. Extra calendar time only helps when it becomes focused study. It can be cancelled out by mocks, fatigue or inconsistent practice.
